Well, why not overcome the initial drag of inertia, and actually start on the journey to becoming something you always wanted to be?
I took my own advice, and tried to check for interior design courses online to scratch this creative itch I had been treating palliatively with recreational apps and mental notes. But alas, I couldn’t find any courses — not even on ‘courseera’, my trusty old friend, and that really disappointed and discouraged me.
Ever heard that old Nigerian saying, “ what you’re looking for in Sokoto, is inside your shokoto?” I use YouTube a whole lot, and it never for once occurred to me to search for interior design classes there. I had already decided to use Pinterest to improve my sense of style, as I had concluded that it was my only option…
Then it hit me: YouTube is the new university! Re-energized, I searched through YouTube with renewed vigor. It was particularly humbling to discover that on searching ‘interior design for dummies’, I realized that I needed a lot more than Pinterest, Instagram and Interior Porn pages on Twitter to be an actual designer or decorator.
This dream of mine is scary, and risky, because it’s a consuming life-long dream of mine that exists alongside another passion of mine and my full time job, Medicine. It’s a scary thing to have because it almost makes you question if you’re meant to do one or the other, as both demand you almost equally. But it is possible to do them both. There is a need to resist the almost inherent fear of failure and the unknown that stops us from approaching the zenith of our potential, the force required to overcome the inertia guarding the gates into the city of my dream: the elegance of interior design.
What’s a road trip without a music playlist? And what’s this ride to the future and elegance of interior design without the ‘playlist’ of online courses and tutorials?
While browsing through YouTube, I stumbled on this video on ‘How To Become An Interior Designer[Without A Degree Or Going Back To School]’
